2018-'19 Interest Meeting & Try-outs | Fall 2018
Mock trial is a team activity that gives competitors the chance to explore the legal system and develop the advocacy skills needed to excel within it. Our teams travel to tournaments hosted by universities throughout the Southeast, presenting a carefully constructed court case based on materials provided annually by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA).
Mock Trial is highly competitive, with nearly 700 registered teams from around the country. UofSC is coming off 3 top finishes last season, and boasts a power ranking among the top 100 teams nationwide. We have earned the right to compete beyond the Regional level in 7 out of the last 10 seasons, when the current championship format was adopted.
Mock trial will undoubtedly give pre-law students an edge before starting
law school, but any student has much to gain through participation. Its a
great way to learn how to excel under pressure, improve your oratory skills,
and work with others. Our alumni have succeeded in widely varying
fields, from attending elite law schools, to serving in the U.S. Navy,
to pursuing careers in neuroscience and engineering.

The Fall season is good preparation and tons of fun, but Spring brings the tournaments overseen by AMTA, which decide the national champion. For 3 seasons straight, we have been trusted to host a Regional Tournament in Columbia that helps to narrow the field.
Our program is made of three tight-knit teams of anywhere from 6-10 members each, who work together to ensure that the program as a whole is successful. We are student run, which gives our members the responsibility of deciding the structure of the program, strategy, and team makeup. We run our own tournaments, recruit new members, and elect our leadership from within. It's a great way to make friends on campus and off!
